North/Winter, East/Spring, South/Summer, West/Fall These four paintings conceive of Maui as a monumental compass in the middle of the ocean. Lynne's intention was to explore the quality of the light at Sunrise in each of the cardinal directions.
The angle of the rising sun varies with the time of year. Each direction is paired with a season.
